As we approach the end of the 2012-2013 school year, the CCN Boston staff would like to address with you an ongoing issue. Overall, this has been another successful year for CCN’s students, and we are most satisfied with the support that you all have given to cultivate their development. We hope that you will choose to continue hosting for CCN.
Unfortunately, in the wake of the Boston Marathon attack and subsequent lockdown, CCN must address last week’s events with you. We are grateful that the CCN community of students, staff, and host parents were physically unharmed. However, we ask that you continue to support your students during this difficult time; this may be a time when young men and young women need strong emotional support.
As you know, one of Monday’s victims was an international student, studying at Boston University on an F-1 Visa. The passing of Lingzi Lu in the Marathon bombing was front page news in China and in some parts of South Korea. There is still an outpouring of sympathy from CCN parents, but there is also a newfound concern for present and future safety. Please be sympathetic to this fact if discussing the news with your student.
We understand that each family had their own unique experience of the tragedy. Many CCN students attended the Marathon. Most students are familiar with Copley Plaza and the surrounding area. Some were present for the attack, but all were physically safe. If you notice a change in behavior, or if your student is experiencing any emotional distress or physical discomfort, please inform CCN immediately. This is an unprecedented and unconventional issue for New England, at least since your student has been paying attention to the news.
As host parents, you are not obligated to speak with your student about the tragedy. However, we ask that you inform CCN if you believe that your student may not fully understand the events that occurred, or if they have trouble understanding the significance. Please feel free to address the tragedy as you see fit, with regard to your student.
