College Admissions
Five Take-Away Tips

1  The Grade Point Average is still the major factor in admissions, and it’s very important to have a balanced curriculum with some challenging courses, especially in your areas of special interest, and in your senior year. Better to have a mixture of A’s and B’s with some AP or honors courses, than have all A’s in regular courses.

2  Going for Early Decision definitely gives students an advantage. But “deferments” don’t mean rejection; colleges just want to know more about you – probably looking for grades improvement in the senior year.

3  The essay is your big opportunity to tell interesting things about yourself: your passions, a life- or goal- changing event, a challenge you worked through, or a humorous experience that provided insight. If you have a lot of sports achievements already mentioned on your application, write your essay about something else.

4  Extra-curricular activities are the third most important factor. Rather than a long list, colleges like to see in-depth pursuit and development of your passions over the years, be it sports, art, music, volunteering, being an entrepreneur, etc.

5  Demonstrate interest in the college and say why you want to go there. Keep admissions contacts updated with new achievements, jobs or volunteer roles. Ask questions but study websites and catalogues first! Try to tour a school before the personal interview
